First Aid for your eyes

When there is an accident, it is vital to start rinsing within the first few seconds. It is also important to rinse effectively, with a generous flow of liquid. The liquid should also be buffered, i.e. have a neutralising effect on alkali splashes (e.g. lye) and acid splashes (e.g. battery acid).

The most common eye injuries are caused by dust, dirt or splashes from corrosive chemicals. This is where you can learn what to do if you or someone around you gets a hazardous substance in their eye.

How to stop a corrosive injury:

  1. Start rinsing the eye immediately. The effect is greatest during the first seconds.
  2. Rinse generously. The eye must be open while rinsing.
  3. Rinse for a long time. Rinse for at least 15 minutes after being exposed to corrosive substances. Use several bottles or continue rinsing at a plumbed-in eye wash unit. Go and seek medical attention, taking several bottles of eye wash with you for continued rinsing on the way to the hospital.

If you have an accident with a substance that contains calcium (cement, concrete or lime), you can safely rinse with Cederroth Eye Wash as it is 100% phosphate-free.

Different corrosive injuries

The pH value of the eye is neutral. If alkalis or acids get into our eyes, the pH value changes radically, and it only takes a few seconds to cause a corrosive injury. Alkaline substances are behind most corrosive injuries.

Common causes of injuries: Exploding batteries, splashes from lye, cement, chalk, dishwasher detergents, some laundry detergents, ammonia, degreasing agents, paint, washing soda and adhesives. Metal filings, dirt and dust should also be immediately flushed away to make sure they do not get stuck in your eye.

Save your eyes with a buffered eye wash

Cederroth’s eye wash is borate buffered. A buffer is a kind of shock absorber that can withstand changes in pH by adding a strong acid or base. Using a buffered eye wash restores the natural pH value of the eye more quickly and effectively than with normal sodium chloride solution.
